KA HALE: THE HOME

KA HALE: THE HOME ✮

An Original Web Series Written & Directed By Anthony Ezell

During the Spring 2023 semester at Texas State University, I had the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Web Series, a course designed to immerse students in the full scope of episodic storytelling. As part of the curriculum, I wrote, directed, and produced my own original two-episode web series.

Drawing from deeply personal experiences, I developed a story inspired by my upbringing and identity. Born and raised on the island of Oʻahu, Hawai’i, I’ve always carried a deep appreciation for the culture and sense of belonging I felt growing up. In the Fall of 2018, I relocated to Texas—a significant shift that became the foundation for the narrative. As someone who is Half Caucasian and Half Filipino, I wanted to explore the complexities of being mixed race, and the nuanced experiences that come with navigating identity in unfamiliar environments.

Titled Ka Hale—which means "The Home" in Hawaiian—the series captures a journey of self-discovery and cultural pride.

Synopsis:
A boy born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai’i is abruptly uprooted and relocated to San Antonio, Texas. There, he’s confronted with a wave of stereotypes and microaggressions that challenge his sense of identity. As he navigates this new environment, he gains a deeper understanding of his roots and a renewed pride in the place he calls home.
